Why InAcademia?
Whether student railcards, free or discounted software and services, or even clothes and concert tickets, the academic community and commercial organisations work together to bring services to the student and academic population to help them optimise their academic experience without breaking their budgets. Inside a physical store it is reasonably easy to reliably identify students and staff through identity cards, passes or union cards but for online services it can be much harder and more expensive to do.
Requiring students to submit scanned copies of their identity cards or other documentation takes effort: it requires high security measures for transfer and storage, and creates an administrative burden to manually check and verify the documentation supplied, making the process of offering special deals time consuming and costly.
This can create a barrier to offering discounts to research and education, thus limiting the number of services that can be accessed by the academic community.
